Where Does the Stillwater River Flow?
The Stillwater River starts in a town called Old Town. From there, it flows for about 2.3 miles (3.7 km) (3.7 km) towards the northwest. During this part of its journey, it runs along the side of Orson Island. This island is special because it's home to the Penobscot Indian Island Reservation, which is where the Penobscot Nation lives.
After that, the river turns and flows south for about 9.2 miles (14.8 km) (14.8 km). It continues along the west sides of both Orson Island and another place called Marsh Island. Along this path, the river goes over three places where dams have been built. These dams help control the water flow. Finally, the Stillwater River meets up with the main part of the Penobscot River again in the town of Orono.
