William Constable-Maxwell, 10th Lord Herries of Terregles facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

William Constable-Maxwell, 10th Lord Herries of Terregles (born August 25, 1804 – died November 12, 1876) was an important Scottish nobleman and a major landowner. He owned large areas of land in both England and Scotland. In 1858, he got back the title of Lord Herries of Terregles, which his family had lost many years before in 1716.

Early Life and Family

William Constable-Maxwell was the oldest son of Marmaduke William Constable, who later added "Maxwell" to his name. His family lived at Everingham in Yorkshire, England, and also had ties to Caerlaverock Castle in Dumfrieshire, Scotland. His mother was Theresa Appollonia Wakeman.

William's father passed away when William was still young. By 1823, William Constable-Maxwell had become the owner of the family's estate in Yorkshire. He lived at Everingham Hall with his mother, who was a widow.

The Family's Lost Title

William's great-great-grandfather had been involved in a rebellion called the Jacobite rising of 1715. Because of this, his family lost their noble title, the Lordship of Herries of Terregles. This act of losing a title is called being "attainted." It meant the title could not be passed down to his children.

Becoming Lord Herries

Many years later, in 1848, a special law was passed by the British Parliament. This law helped the descendants of the 5th Earl of Nithsdale (William's ancestor) get their family rights back. It meant they could try to claim the Lordship of Herries of Terregles again. However, they could not get back the higher title of "Earl."

On June 23, 1858, the House of Lords (a part of the British Parliament) officially agreed that William Constable-Maxwell could become the Lord Herries of Terregles. This was a big moment for his family, as they finally got their ancient title back after more than 140 years.

Marriage and Children

On November 12, 1835, William Constable-Maxwell married Marcia Vavasour. She was the oldest daughter of Sir Edward Marmaduke Joseph Stourton, who later became Sir Edward Vavasour.

William and Marcia had six children together:

  • Marmaduke Francis Constable-Maxwell (1837–1908), who later became the 11th Lord Herries of Terregles after his father.
  • William Constable-Maxwell (1841–1903).
  • Joseph Constable-Maxwell (1847–1923), who later added "Scott" to his name. He married Mary Monica Hope-Scott. Her grandfather was the famous author Walter Scott.
  • Bernard Constable-Maxwell (1848–1938), who was a member of the Royal Company of Archers, a ceremonial guard in Scotland.
  • Walter Constable Constable-Maxwell (1849–1925).
  • Mary Anne Constable-Maxwell (died 1941), who married her cousin, Edmund Constable-Maxwell-Stuart.
