William Crichton-Dalrymple was a Scottish nobleman who lived from 1699 to 1768. He held important titles, including the 5th Earl of Dumfries and the 4th Earl of Stair. He was also a Knight of the Thistle (KT), which is a special honor in Scotland.

In 1742, William became the Earl of Dumfries after his mother, Penelope Crichton, passed away. He also held a position called the Sheriff of Clackmannan. A sheriff was like a local leader or judge. He held this role until 1747, when these types of sheriff positions were changed.

Military Service and Key Battles

William Crichton-Dalrymple served in the Army for many years, from 1721 to 1747. He was an important helper, known as an aide-de-Camp, to his uncle, John Dalrymple, the 2nd Earl of Stair.

Battle of Dettingen Participation

In 1743, William was with his uncle at the Battle of Dettingen. This was a major battle during the War of the Austrian Succession, fought in Germany. It was a significant event in his military career.

Building Dumfries House

William Crichton-Dalrymple is well-known for building a beautiful home called Dumfries House. He hired famous architects, Robert Adam and his brother John Adam, to design it.

Construction Timeline

The construction of Dumfries House took several years, starting in 1754 and finishing in 1759. This grand house is still a famous landmark today.

Later, in 1762, William married Anne Duff.

Succession of Titles

When William Crichton-Dalrymple passed away in 1768, his titles were divided. The Earldom of Dumfries went to his nephew, Patrick McDouall-Crichton, 6th Earl of Dumfries. The Earldom of Stair went to his cousin, John Dalrymple.
