Patrick McDouall-Crichton was an important Scottish nobleman who lived from 1726 to 1803. He held the title of the 6th Earl of Dumfries. This means he was a high-ranking member of the Scottish nobility.
A Scottish Nobleman
Patrick became the Earl of Dumfries in 1768. He inherited this special title from his mother's uncle, William Dalrymple-Crichton. When Patrick passed away, his grandson, John Crichton-Stuart, took over the title. John later became the 2nd Marquess of Bute.
Patrick lived in London, a big city in England. He also had a large home called Dumfries House in Ayrshire, Scotland. This house was very close to Auchinleck House, which was the home of James Boswell. James Boswell was a famous writer.

Patrick and James Boswell seemed to get along well. Boswell wrote about the Earl a few times in his personal journals. Boswell even visited the Earl several times in London during 1787 and 1788.
His Family Life
Patrick McDouall-Crichton married Margaret Crauford on September 12, 1771. She was often called "Peggy." Margaret was the daughter of Ronald Crauford, who lived in Restalrig. People in Restalrig village were very happy about their marriage.
Patrick and Margaret had one child:
- Lady Elizabeth Penelope McDouall-Crichton (born November 25, 1772 – died July 25, 1797). She later became known as Elizabeth, Lady Mount Stuart.
