Who Was William Cusance?

William Cusance came from a family in a region called Burgundy, which is now part of France. He started his career working for King Edward II. He got his start thanks to a powerful person named Hugh Despenser the Younger.

Early Career and Royal Service

In 1320, William Cusance held an important job as the keeper of the great wardrobe. This role was like managing the king's personal belongings, money, and supplies.

When King Edward II and the Despensers lost power in 1327, William Cusance was not affected. This was because he had already started working for Prince Edward, who soon became King Edward III.

Around 1332, he also spent some time as the keeper of the wardrobe for the king's brother, the Earl of Cornwall. This shows he was trusted by important members of the royal family.

Becoming a Royal Treasurer

Before he became the main treasurer in 1341, William Cusance briefly served as the keeper of the king's household wardrobe from 1349 to 1350. This was another important role in managing the royal household's finances.

His biggest role was serving as the treasurer for England from 1341 to 1344. The treasurer was in charge of all the country's money and finances, a very important job in the king's government.

A Legal Challenge

Later in his life, William Cusance was given the title of archdeacon of Cornwall. An archdeacon is a senior church official. However, another person, who was chosen by the Pope, challenged his appointment. This led to a long legal battle for William Cusance.
