The Story of the William Decker House
Building a Home in the 1700s
The first part of the William Decker House was built way back in 1730. It was constructed by an early settler named Garrett Decker. Imagine living in a time when most buildings were made of wood and life was very different!
Later, in 1776, the house was made much bigger by William Decker. This was the same year that the United States declared its independence! So, the house has seen a lot of history unfold around it.
Becoming a Historic Landmark
Because of its age and importance, the William Decker House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. This is a special list kept by the United States government. It helps protect buildings, sites, and objects that are important to American history and culture. Being on this list means the house is recognized as a valuable part of our past.
A Restaurant and a Fire
More recently, the William Decker House was connected to a newer building. Together, they became a restaurant called the Colonial Inn 1776. People could enjoy meals in a place filled with history.
However, on March 24, 2008, a fire broke out at the restaurant. It caused a lot of damage to the newer part of the building. Luckily, the original William Decker House itself was mostly saved. It only had a little bit of damage, showing how strong and well-built it was.
