William Dowdeswell (born August 18, 1682 – died September 5, 1728) was a British landowner and politician. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is like a part of the British government, from 1712 to 1722.

Early Life and Family

William Dowdeswell was the son of Richard Dowdeswell, who was also a Member of Parliament (MP). The family owned a large estate called Pull Court, located near Bushley in Worcestershire, England.

The Dowdeswell family was quite involved in politics. Many of William's relatives, including his father, served as MPs. His father, Richard, was an MP for Tewkesbury for many years in a row.

William went to Eton College, a famous school, and then started studying at Christ Church, Oxford in 1700. After his studies, he traveled to other countries. In 1711, he took over his father's estate and responsibilities.

In 1712, William married his first wife, Katharine Cokayne. She was the daughter of a nobleman.

Political Journey

William Dowdeswell began his political career in 1712. He became a Member of Parliament (MP) for the area of Tewkesbury. He won this position without anyone running against him in a special election held on January 1, 1712.

He was re-elected as MP for Tewkesbury in 1713 and again in 1715, both times without facing any opponents. He decided not to run for election in 1722.

Later, in 1726, he was given the important role of Sheriff of Worcestershire. This was a local government position responsible for law and order in the county.

In 1719, William married his second wife, Amy Hammond. Her father, Anthony Hammond, was also an MP and a poet.

Later Life and Family Legacy

William Dowdeswell passed away in 1728. He had a son and a daughter with his first wife, and four sons with his second wife.

His son, also named William Dowdeswell, followed in his footsteps. This younger William Dowdeswell later became a very important politician, serving as the Chancellor of the Exchequer. The Chancellor of the Exchequer is a key government role responsible for the country's money and economy.
