William Evans (lexicographer) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

William Evans (died around 1776) was a Welsh minister and a lexicographer. A minister is a religious leader, and a lexicographer is someone who writes dictionaries.

Life of William Evans

William Evans came from a place called Cefn-gwilli in Llanedi, Carmarthen, Wales. He went to college at Carmarthen College from 1767 to 1772. His teacher there was Dr. Jenkins.

For some years, William Evans was the pastor (a type of minister) for a Presbyterian church in Sherborne. Presbyterian is a branch of Christianity.

By March 1776, he took a new job in Moretonhampstead, Devon. However, he only stayed there for seven weeks. He left on May 12 because he was not feeling well. He probably died soon after that.

William Evans's Dictionary

William Evans is mainly remembered for his English-Welsh dictionary. He put this dictionary together while he was still a student. It was first published in 1771.

A second version of his dictionary came out much later, in 1812. Another Welsh expert on books, Daniel Silvan Evans, thought that William Evans's dictionary was quite good.
