William F. Tate IV is an American social scientist and a leader in higher education. He is currently the President of Rutgers University. Before this, he was the 28th president of Louisiana State University.

William Tate's Education and Early Career
William Tate earned several college degrees. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in economics from Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, in 1982. He then earned a Master of Arts degree in teaching mathematics from the University of Texas, Dallas, in 1987.
In 1991, he completed his Doctor of Philosophy degree in mathematics education at the University of Maryland, College Park. Later, in 2011, he earned a Master of Psychiatric Epidemiology from Washington University.
Academic Roles and Leadership
After his studies, Tate completed a special fellowship in social policy. This was at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, from 1991 to 1992. He then worked at Washington University in St. Louis for 18 years. There, he was the dean of the graduate school for Arts and Sciences.
He also held important positions at other universities. He was a distinguished professor at the University of South Carolina. He also held a special chair at Texas Christian University. He was also a faculty member at University of Wisconsin–Madison.
Leadership at Louisiana State University
From 2021 to June 30, 2025, William Tate served as the 28th president of Louisiana State University. In this role, he was in charge of the entire university system. His time at LSU ended when he accepted a new leadership position.
Becoming President of Rutgers University
William Tate became the next president of Rutgers University on July 1, 2025. Rutgers is a large and well-known university. As president, he leads the university and helps guide its future.
Awards and Recognitions
William Tate is highly respected in the field of education. He is a fellow and a past president of the American Educational Research Association. This is a group for people who study education.
In 2016, he was chosen as a member of the National Academy of Education. This is a very high honor for educators. In 2022, he was also elected to the American Academy of Arts and Science. This group recognizes leaders in many fields.
