William F. Tate IV is an American expert in social science and a leader in higher education. He helps run universities and colleges. In May 2021, he became the president of the Louisiana State University (LSU) system. He also became the head, or chancellor, of the main LSU campus in Baton Rouge.

Dr. Tate made history as the first Black person to hold these important roles at LSU. He is also the first Black person to lead any school in the Southeastern Conference, which is a big group of universities known for sports and academics.

Dr. Tate's Career Journey

Before coming to LSU, Dr. Tate was a top leader at the University of South Carolina. There, he was the Provost and Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs. This means he was in charge of all the teaching and learning programs at the university.

He was also a special professor there, teaching about how people live in groups (sociology), how diseases spread (epidemiology), and how to prevent health problems.

Past Roles in Education

Dr. Tate has worked at several other well-known universities. He was a dean and vice provost at Washington University in St. Louis. A dean is a leader of a specific part of a university, like a college of arts and sciences.

He also held an important teaching position at Texas Christian University. Earlier in his career, he was a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Awards and Recognitions

Dr. Tate is highly respected in the world of education. He is a fellow and a past president of the American Educational Research Association. This is a group for people who study how education works.

In 2016, he was chosen to be a member of the National Academy of Education. This is a very special honor for people who have done great things in education. In 2022, he was also elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, which recognizes leaders in many fields.

William Tate was raised in the Catholic faith. He is married to Kim Cash Tate. She is a well-known speaker, singer, and writer who shares her Christian faith online.
