William Faithorne the Younger facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

William Faithorne the Younger (born in 1656, died around 1701) was a talented English artist. He was known for making special kinds of prints called mezzotints. These prints were very popular in his time.

His Life Story

William Faithorne the Younger was born in London. He was the oldest son of another famous artist, William Faithorne the Elder. Some people, like Horace Walpole, said he faced some challenges. These challenges meant he had to work hard for booksellers.

However, another expert, John Chaloner Smith, disagreed. He pointed out that William's father died in 1691. But William the Younger's prints were made even during the time of Queen Anne. This was much later. Also, his earlier works were signed "W. Faithorne, junior." This shows he was working independently.

We don't know the exact year William the Younger died. It is believed he was buried in St. Martin's Churchyard. This was near Covent Garden in London.

What He Created

William Faithorne the Younger created many beautiful prints. We know of at least 43 different plates he engraved. Some of his famous works include portraits of important people.

He made prints of:

  • Anne of Denmark, who was a princess.
  • Queen Anne of England (after a painting by Michael Dahl).
  • King Charles I.
  • King Charles II (after a painting by Ehrenstrahl).
  • John Dryden, a famous writer (after a painting by John Closterman).
  • Prince Eugene.
  • Lady Grace Gethin.
  • Sir Richard Haddock.
  • Four important lords on one sheet: William, Earl of Portland; Edward, Earl of Orford; John, Lord Somers; and Charles, Lord Halifax.
  • John Moore.
  • Mary, Princess of Orange.
  • Frederick I of Prussia.
  • Frederick, Duke of Schomberg.
  • Thomas Shadwell.
  • Three different portraits of King William III.
  • James Thynne.
  • Sophia Dorothea of Zelle.

These prints helped people see what important figures looked like. They also showed William Faithorne the Younger's great skill as an engraver.
