William Fytche (born 1716 – died August 10, 1753) was an important leader for the British East India Company. This company was a powerful British trading group. He served as the President of Bengal in the middle 1700s. Bengal was a large and rich area in India. William Fytche was one of the last leaders before the Battle of Plassey. This battle helped the company take strong control over parts of India.

William Fytche's Life and Career
William Fytche was the youngest son in his family. His father, also named William Fytche, was a Member of Parliament. This meant his father helped make laws in Britain. His mother was Mary Corey from Danbury.
Early Career in India
In 1746, William Fytche joined the Calcutta council of merchants. This council was a group of important business people. They managed trade for the East India Company in Calcutta, India. In 1749, he moved to Murshidabad. There, he took charge of a "factory" in Cossimbazaar. In those days, a factory was not a place that made things. It was a trading post or office for merchants.
Becoming President of Bengal
William Fytche became the President, or Governor, of Bengal on January 8, 1752. This was a very important job. It meant he was in charge of all the East India Company's business and activities in Bengal. He had spent 21 years living and working in India by this time. This long experience helped him understand the region.
William Fytche's Family Life
William Fytche married Lucia Beard on February 25, 1744. They got married at Fort St George, Madras. This was another important British trading post in India. He was working there before he moved to Bengal.
His Daughter and Legacy
William and Lucia had a daughter named Elizabeth. She later inherited money and property from her uncle, Thomas Fytche. He lived at Danbury Place in Essex, England. In 1775, Elizabeth married a man named Lewis Disney. After they married, Lewis changed his name to Lewis Disney Fytche. This was done to keep the Fytche family name going.
His Death
William Fytche died when he was only 35 years old. He passed away from a sickness called dysentery. After William died, his wife Lucia married again. She married William McGuire and had two more children with him.
