Sir William Gifford's Life and Work

Joining the Navy

William Gifford was born around 1649. His father was Sir Richard Gifford. William decided to join the Royal Navy when he was about 21 years old, around 1670. He worked hard and was promoted to the rank of Captain in 1682. This was a big achievement in the navy.

Important Roles

Sir William Gifford held several important jobs during his career. In 1702, he was chosen to be the Resident Commissioner at Portsmouth Dockyard. This meant he was in charge of the naval base there. He held this job until 1705.

Later, in 1708, he became the Governor of Greenwich Hospital. This hospital was a special place that cared for sailors who were old or had been injured while serving their country.

Serving in Parliament

Besides his navy work, Sir William Gifford was also a member of parliament for Portsmouth. He represented the people of Portsmouth in the government. He served two terms: first from 1702 to 1708, and then again from 1711 to 1713. As an MP, he helped make decisions and laws for Great Britain.
