Life and Career of Sir William Gosset

Sir William Gosset joined the Royal Engineers in 1798. The Royal Engineers are a special part of the army that builds things like bridges and forts.

Early Public Service Roles

In 1813, Gosset worked as a secretary for a special trip. This trip was to the Barbary States, which are countries in North Africa. He helped with important talks during this mission.

From 1820 to 1826, he was a Member of Parliament for Truro. This meant people in Truro voted for him to represent them in the British government.

Key Government Positions

Gosset continued to serve in important roles. From 1827 to 1828, he was a secretary to Lord Anglesey. Lord Anglesey was in charge of military supplies at the time.

Later, from 1828 to 1829, Gosset was Lord Anglesey's private secretary. This was when Lord Anglesey was the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. This role meant he was the King's representative in Ireland.

From 1831 to 1835, Gosset became the Under-Secretary for Ireland. This was a very senior job in the government of Ireland. He helped manage many important affairs there.
