William Henry Donaldson (born June 2, 1931 – died June 12, 2024) was an important American businessman. He was the 27th Chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The SEC is a government agency that helps protect investors and keep financial markets fair. He led the SEC from February 2003 to June 2005.
Donaldson also held other big jobs. He worked for President Richard Nixon and was an adviser to Vice President Nelson Rockefeller. He was also in charge of the New York Stock Exchange and a large company called Aetna. He even started his own investment firm, Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette.

Early Life and School Days
William Donaldson went to two famous universities. He studied at Yale University and earned his first degree in 1953. Later, he went to Harvard University and got a master's degree in business in 1958. While at Yale, he joined a special student group called Skull and Bones.
What William Donaldson Did
Donaldson started his career at a banking company called G. H. Walker & Co. He later returned to Yale University to do something new.
Starting the Yale School of Management
William Donaldson founded the Yale School of Management. This is a special business school at Yale. He wanted students to learn how to work in both private businesses and government jobs. He hoped many students would choose to work for the government.
However, most of the first students who graduated chose to work in business instead. Even so, the school still honors him. There is a portrait of him in the main building. Also, a top leadership award at the school is named "Donaldson Fellows."
Other Important Roles
Donaldson also served in the United States Marine Corps, which is part of the U.S. military. From 1999 to 2003, he was the Chairman of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. This group works to promote peace around the world.
He was a chartered financial analyst (CFA), which means he had special training in finance. He also received many honorary degrees, which are special awards from universities. Later in his life, he was on the board of a company called IEX.
Family Life and Passing
William Donaldson was married to Jane Phillips Donaldson. They had three children together. He passed away on June 12, 2024, when he was 93 years old.
