William Hay, 10th Earl of Erroll was an important Scottish nobleman. He lived from before 1597 until 1636. He was also a member of the Privy Council.
About William Hay
William was the oldest son of Francis Hay, 9th Earl of Erroll, who was the 9th Earl. His mother was Lady Elizabeth Douglas.
Early Life and Role
Before he became an Earl, William was known as "Lord Hay." When he was younger, in January 1611, he helped escort an important French visitor. This diplomat, Marshal de Laverdin, was escorted from Croydon to Lambeth in England. William was joined by the Earl of Pembroke and Lord Windsor for this task.
Becoming an Earl
When his father passed away in 1631, William became the 10th Earl of Erroll. This meant he inherited his father's title and responsibilities.
In May 1633, he also became a member of the Privy Council of Scotland. This was a group of trusted advisors to the King.
William also took on the important role of Lord High Constable of Scotland. This was a very old and respected position. In this role, he participated in the Scottish coronation of King Charles I on June 18, 1633, at Holyrood Abbey.
Family Lands
Sadly, William spent a lot of money during his time as Earl. Because of this, he had to sell some of his family's historic lands. These lands were in a place called Errol. They had been given to his family by King William the Lion way back in the 1100s.
Family Life
In September 1618, William Hay married Anne Lyon. She was the daughter of Patrick Lyon, 1st Earl of Kinghorne and Anne Murray.
They had two children:
- Gilbert Hay (born June 13, 1631 – died 1674). He later became the 11th Earl of Erroll.
- Lady Margaret. She married Lord Henry Ker in 1638. After he passed away, she married John Kennedy, 6th Earl of Cassilis in 1644.
