Gilbert Hay, 11th Earl of Erroll (born June 13, 1631 – died October 1674) was an important Scottish nobleman. He held the special title of Earl of Erroll, which meant he was a powerful leader in Scotland.

Who Was Gilbert Hay?

Gilbert Hay was a Scottish nobleman who lived in the 1600s. He became the 11th person to hold the title of Earl of Erroll. This was a very old and important title in Scotland.

Early Life and Becoming Earl

Gilbert Hay was born on June 13, 1631. His father was William Hay, 10th Earl of Erroll. His mother was Anne, the daughter of Patrick Lyon, 1st Earl of Kinghorne.

Gilbert became the Earl of Erroll when he was only five years old. This happened after his father passed away in 1636. Because he was so young, his uncle, the Earl of Kinghorne, helped guide him. His uncle acted as his tutor and looked after his affairs.

A Special Role: The King's Coronation

On January 1, 1651, Gilbert Hay had a very important job. He took part in the coronation of King Charles II in Scotland. A coronation is a ceremony where a king is officially crowned.

Gilbert served as the Lord High Constable of Scotland. This was a special role that involved protecting the King. During the ceremony, King Charles rode to Scone Abbey with Gilbert on his right side.

Facing Challenges and New Beginnings

Because he helped crown King Charles II, Gilbert faced some trouble. Oliver Cromwell's government, which was in charge of England at the time, made him pay a large fine. In 1654, they demanded £2000. This was a huge amount of money back then.

Gilbert explained that he had not fought against England in any battles. He said that such a large fine would make him bankrupt, meaning he would lose all his money.

Later, when the king was restored to power in England in 1660 (an event called the Restoration), things got better for Gilbert. In 1666, he officially got his titles back. In 1661, he also became a member of the Privy Council of Scotland. This was a group of important advisors to the King.

Family and Legacy

On January 7, 1658, Gilbert Hay married Lady Catherine Carnegie. She was the daughter of James Carnegie, 2nd Earl of Southesk. Gilbert and Catherine did not have any children.

Gilbert Hay passed away in October 1674 when he was 43 years old. Since he had no children, his cousin, John Hay, became the next Earl of Erroll.
