William Herbert, 1st Baron Powis, was an important Welsh politician. He was born around 1573 and passed away on March 7, 1655. He served in the English Parliament several times between 1597 and 1629. He was also given the special title of Knight of the Bath.
Early Life and Family
William Herbert was born at Powis Castle in Wales. His father was Sir Edward Herbert, and his mother was Mary Stanley. In 1587, his father bought the lands of the Powis barony. This was a special type of land ownership.
William's family had many important connections. His grandfather, Sir Thomas Stanley, worked at the Royal Mint in the Tower of London. This was during the time of Queen Elizabeth I. William's other grandfather was William Herbert, 1st Earl of Pembroke. His grandmother, Anne Parr, was the sister of Queen Catherine Parr. Catherine Parr was the last wife of King Henry VIII.
Political Career
William Herbert held many important roles during his life. He was a High Steward for Queen Elizabeth I. In 1597, he was first chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Montgomeryshire. This meant he represented the people of that area in the government.
From 1602 to 1641, he served as the Custos Rotulorum of Montgomeryshire. This was a very important local official who kept the county's records. When King James I became king in 1603, William Herbert was made a Knight of the Bath. This was a special honor given by the king.
He was elected as a Member of Parliament for Montgomeryshire many more times. He served in 1604, 1614, 1624, 1625, 1626, and 1628. In 1613, he also became the High Sheriff of Montgomeryshire. This was another important local government role. On April 2, 1629, he was given the title of Baron Powis. This made him a lord, and the title was connected to Powis Castle.
Family Life
Before the year 1600, Lord Powis married Lady Eleanor Percy. She was born in 1583. Her father was Henry Percy, 8th Earl of Northumberland. William and Eleanor had several children together.
Their children included:
- Percy Herbert, 2nd Baron Powis (1598–1667): He became a baronet before taking over his father's titles. He married Elizabeth Craven.
- Katherine Herbert (around 1600–1666): She married Sir Robert Vaughan. After he passed away, she married Sir James Palmer.
- Lucy Herbert: She married William Habington in 1633.
- Marie Herbert (1604–1660): She married Humphrey Jones.
Lord Powis passed away on March 7, 1655. His son, Percy Herbert, became the next Baron Powis. William Herbert was buried at St Mary's Church, Hendon in London.
Later Generations
Through his eldest son, Percy, William Herbert became the grandfather of William Herbert, 1st Marquess of Powis. This grandson became the 1st Earl of Powis in 1674. Later, he became the 1st Marquess of Powis in 1687.
His daughter Katherine's second marriage led to another notable descendant. Her son, Roger Palmer, 1st Earl of Castlemaine, was well-known.
