William Hine (1687–1730) was an English organist and composer. He was known for his beautiful church music. Hine spent most of his adult life working at Gloucester Cathedral. He taught music to many students who became famous musicians themselves.

Who Was William Hine?

William Hine was born in a place called Brightwell in Oxfordshire, England. He showed musical talent from a young age.

Early Life and Musical Start

In 1694, when he was just seven years old, William became a chorister at Magdalen College, Oxford. A chorister is a singer in a church choir. Later, in 1705, he became a clerk there. This meant he had duties related to the church services.

William then moved to London to continue his music studies. He learned from a famous musician named Jeremiah Clarke. William greatly admired Clarke's style and tried to play music in a similar way.

A Talented Organist

Around 1711 or 1712, William Hine got an important job. He became the organist at Gloucester Cathedral. An organist plays the large pipe organ during church services. This was a very respected position.

William married Alicia, the daughter of Abraham Rudhall, who was a famous bell-maker. The leaders of Gloucester Cathedral were very happy with William's work. They even increased his salary by 20 pounds each year. This was a big sign of how much they valued him.

William Hine passed away on August 28, 1730, when he was 43 years old. His wife, Alicia, died a few years later in 1735.

His Music and Legacy

William Hine was not only a great organist but also a composer. This means he wrote his own music. He taught many students who went on to become important musicians. Two of his most famous students were Richard Church and William Hayes.

After William Hine died, his wife published a collection of his music. It was called Harmonia Sacra Glocestriensis. This book included several of his anthems. Anthems are special songs often sung by choirs in church. Some of his well-known anthems were Save me and Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous. The book also featured his Jubilate, which is a joyful piece of music.
