Early Life and Political Start
William Humphrey was born in the Woodvale area of Belfast, which is in Northern Ireland. He went to school at the Boys' Model School.
He became involved in his local community by joining the Woodvale Residents' Association. This group helps people living in the Woodvale area. Later, he joined the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), which is a political party in Northern Ireland. He became an important member of the party, serving as its chairman in North Belfast.
Joining the City Council
In 2005, William Humphrey was elected to the Belfast City Council. This council makes decisions about how the city of Belfast is run. He represented the Court district.
After being on the council for a year, he was chosen to be the High Sheriff of Belfast in 2006. This is an old and important role in the city.
Becoming a Member of the Assembly
William Humphrey tried to become a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) in 2007, but he was not elected that time.
In 2010, he ran for a seat in the UK Parliament for West Belfast, but he did not win. In June of that year, he became the Deputy Lord Mayor of Belfast. The Lord Mayor is like the main leader of the city council.
Later in 2010, he was chosen to take over from Nigel Dodds as an MLA for North Belfast. He was then officially elected as an MLA in the 2011 Assembly election. He said he wanted to work hard for the people of North Belfast, just like Nigel Dodds had done.
Public Service and Retirement
In 2021, William Humphrey was given a special award called the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). This award recognized his public service, especially for the help he gave during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2022, William Humphrey announced that he would not run for election again in the 2022 Northern Ireland Assembly election. This meant he retired from his role as an MLA.
