William James Magarey (born in 1840, died in 1920) was an important person in early South Australia. He worked as a flour miller, which means he owned and ran mills that turned grain into flour. He was also a politician, helping to make decisions for the colony.

Early Life and Business

William was the son of James Magarey. His father, James, managed a large farm called Gannawarra Station. This farm was located near the River Murray. Later, James Magarey owned a flour mill in Hindmarsh, South Australia. Sadly, his father died in a shipwreck in 1859.

William worked on his father's farm when he was younger. After his father passed away, William took over the flour mill in Hindmarsh. He also bought another flour mill in Port Pirie.

Political Career

William James Magarey was involved in politics. He was elected to the House of Assembly, which is like a parliament or a group of people who make laws. He represented the area called West Torrens. He served as a politician from April 1878 to March 1881.

Other Activities

Besides his work as a miller and politician, William was busy with many other things. He was part of the leadership for several important companies. These included the Savings Bank and the National Mutual Life Association. He also helped lead the South Australian Woollen Company. For some years, he was the chairman, or leader, of the Executor and Trustee Agency Company.

William was also a keen member of South Australia's Volunteer Force. This was a group of people who trained to help defend the area before Australia became one country.

Family Life

On March 10, 1864, William married Anna Eliza Bundey. She was the sister of a well-known person named Sir Henry Bundey. William and Anna had a son named William Ashley Magarey (1868–1929). Their son became a lawyer and is famous for creating the Magarey Medal. This medal is a special award in Australian rules football.

Around 1908, William became unwell with a condition called rheumatism. This made it very hard for him to walk. Even so, he continued with his duties for as long as he possibly could.
