William Joseph Haynes Jr., born on September 5, 1949, is a respected former judge. He served as a United States district judge for the United States District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee. This means he worked in a special court that handles important cases for that area.
Early Life and School
William Haynes Jr. was born in Memphis, Tennessee. He went to the College of St. Thomas and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1970. Later, he studied law at Vanderbilt University School of Law. He received his law degree, called a Juris Doctor, in 1973.
His Career as a Lawyer
After finishing law school, Mr. Haynes started working in the legal field.
- From 1973 to 1984, he worked for the Tennessee Attorney General's Office.
- He started as an assistant state attorney general.
- Then he became a senior state assistant general.
- Finally, he served as a deputy state attorney general.
- In 1984, he also worked as a private lawyer in Nashville, Tennessee.
- He also taught law at different schools. He was an adjunct professor at Southeastern Paralegal Institute from 1986 to 1990.
- He also taught at Vanderbilt University School of Law from 1987 to 1994, and again from 1997 to 1998.
His Time as a Federal Judge
Mr. Haynes had a long and important career as a judge.
- From 1984 to 1999, he was a United States magistrate judge. This is a judge who helps the main district judges with their work.
- On May 27, 1999, President Bill Clinton chose him to become a United States District Judge.
- The United States Senate approved his nomination on November 10, 1999.
- He officially became a judge on November 15, 1999.
- He served as the Chief Judge for the Middle District of Tennessee from 2012 to 2014.
- On December 1, 2014, he took on "senior status". This means he worked a reduced schedule but could still hear cases.
- He fully retired from his active duties as a judge on January 16, 2017.
