William King-Noel, the 1st Earl of Lovelace, was an important English nobleman and scientist. He was born on February 21, 1805, and passed away on December 29, 1893. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Society, a group for top scientists.

Before he became an Earl, people called him the Honourable William King. Later, from 1833 to 1838, he was known as Lord King.

Early Life and Important Roles

William King-Noel was the oldest son of Peter King, 7th Baron King. His mother was Lady Hester Fortescue. Her grandfather was George Grenville, a famous politician. William also had a younger brother, Peter John Locke King, who was also a politician.

William went to school at Eton and Trinity College. After his studies, he worked in the diplomatic service. This meant he helped represent his country in other nations. He was a secretary to Lord Nugent.

When his father died in 1833, William inherited the title of Baron. He also worked on designing and improving his homes.

New Titles and Responsibilities

In 1838, William received two new important titles. He became Viscount Ockham and the Earl of Lovelace.

In 1840, he was chosen as the Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey. This was a high-ranking job representing the King or Queen in the county of Surrey. He held this position for the rest of his life.

On November 25, 1841, he joined the Royal Society. This is a very old and respected group for scientists.

He also had a role in the military. In 1852, he became a Colonel in the 2nd Royal Surrey Militia. This was a local army group. He stepped down from this role in 1870. However, he was then made an Honorary Colonel of the same regiment. He kept this honorary title until he died.

In 1860, he added "Noel" to his family name, becoming King-Noel.

Ben Damph Estate in Scotland

In 1886, the Earl of Lovelace bought a large area of land in Scotland. This included Ben Damph Lodge and about 12,000 acres of land. It was a popular place for hunting and outdoor activities. This estate was located at the east end of Loch Torridon, in a place called Ross-shire.

A few years later, in 1889, he helped to promote a new railway project. This was the Aultbea Railway.
