William King (born January 30, 1949) is an American singer, musician, and choreographer. He is a founding member of the famous music group, the Commodores. In the band, he plays many instruments like the trumpet, guitar, synthesizer, flute, and congas (which are a type of percussion instrument). He is also the group's choreographer, meaning he creates their dance moves.

Early Life and Music Journey
William King was born in Birmingham, Alabama. He went to Tuskegee University, where he was a great athlete. He even received special awards in the SIAC for his skills.
Choosing Music Over Sports
After college, William thought about becoming a professional tennis player. However, his love for music was stronger. He decided to continue his journey with the Commodores instead. He also had a job writing computer software, but he left that to focus on his band.
Writing Hit Songs
William King helped write some popular songs for the Commodores. Two of these songs are "Lady" and "I'm In Love." He wrote these songs with Harold Hudson and his wife, Shirley Hanna-King. "I'm In Love" was released in 1985 as the B-side to their single "Janet."

William King married Shirley Hanna-King in 1976. Shirley is also a talented songwriter and was nominated for a Grammy Award. They have four children together.
