Who Was Sir William Lemon?
Sir William Lemon came from an important family in Cornwall, England. His father was also named William Lemon, and his mother was Anne Willyams. His grandfather, another William Lemon, bought the family's main home, Carclew House, in 1749.
William Lemon had a younger brother named John. John also became a Member of Parliament, representing different towns like Saltash and Truro. Sir William also had a sister, Anne, who married another MP, John Buller.
His Education and Travels
Sir William Lemon went to Christ Church, Oxford, which is a famous university in England. After his studies, he went on a "Grand Tour". This was a long trip around Europe that young wealthy men often took. It was a way to learn about art, history, and different cultures.
His Time in Parliament
Sir William Lemon started his political career early. He first became a Member of Parliament for Penryn in 1770. He served there for four years.
Then, in 1774, he became the MP for Cornwall itself. He held this position for a remarkable 50 years! This means he was an MP for a total of 54 years, which is a very long time to serve in government.
In 1774, he was also given the title of Baronet. This is a special honor that means he could use "Sir" before his name and "Baronet" after it. His title was "Baronet Lemon of Carclew".
His Family Life
Sir William Lemon married Jane Buller. Jane was the oldest daughter of James Buller, who was also an MP for Cornwall. Jane's mother was Jane Bathurst, whose father was Allen Bathurst, 1st Earl Bathurst. Sadly, Jane Lemon passed away in 1823.
