History of the William Luelleman House
The William Luelleman House has a long and interesting history. Even though it is named after William Luelleman, many different people and groups have owned and used it over the years.
Early Owners and Uses
The house was first built for Gerhard Hehemann, who was an important leader in the community. Over time, the building served many purposes. It was once the village's post office, where people sent and received mail. It also operated as a shop, selling various goods to the community. At one point, it even became a Dutch Reformed church, a place for religious gatherings.
Even when parts of the house were used for businesses or church services, other parts continued to be homes for different families. This shows how versatile and important the building was to the people of New Bremen.
A Historic Landmark and Museum
In 1975, the Luelleman House was recognized as a very important historical building. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places because its old architecture was so well-preserved. Since New Bremen has a strong German heritage, this house was seen as a top example of German architecture in the entire state of Ohio.
Today, the William Luelleman House is home to a museum. The New Bremen Historic Association runs the museum. This association bought the house shortly after it was started in 1973. The museum helps people learn about the history of the house and the New Bremen area.
