History of New Bremen
Founding and Early Days
New Bremen began as a farming community. It was settled by people from Bavaria and Hanover in Germany. They traveled from Bremen, Germany, to America. Their journey took them through West Virginia and along the Ohio River to Cincinnati.
Once they reached Cincinnati, 33 founders created a group called the City of Bremen Society. This group decided to buy 80 acres of land in Ohio to build a new town. The land was in German Township. The farming community started in 1832. By 1833, the plan for Bremen was officially recorded. Land shares were given away by lottery to new settlers.
Growth with the Miami and Erie Canal
At first, the village did not grow much. It was hard to get goods to markets. The swampy land also made travel slow and costly. Many people also got sick with malaria.
Everything changed when the Miami and Erie Canal was finished. There were so few workers that subcontractors offered special treats to attract them. The Canal opened and brought new opportunities. It made it cheaper to transport farm products. This made farming more profitable.
New Bremen quickly became a busy place. Hundreds of freight boats moved goods often. Many passenger boats also carried people from Cincinnati. Today, you can still see the restored locks from the Canal in downtown New Bremen. There is also a lock keeper's house.
Geography of New Bremen
Location and Waterways
New Bremen is in a special geographic spot. Its southern edge is the most southern point of the St. Lawrence River Basin. This huge basin covers about 519,000 square miles.
This is because New Bremen is where the St. Mary's River begins. The St. Mary's River flows into the Maumee River. The Maumee River is the largest and most southern river that flows into Lake Erie. Lake Erie is one of the Great Lakes.
The United States Census Bureau says that New Bremen covers about 2.15 square miles (6.06 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
