This special medal is given to soldiers from the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries who show amazing bravery against the enemy.
A Brave Soldier: William Martin Cafe
William Martin Cafe was born in London, England. He grew up to join the army, serving in the Bengal Army in British India. He became a General, which is a very high rank in the military.
His Amazing Bravery
When he was 32 years old, William Martin Cafe was a Captain in the 56th Bengal Native Infantry. This was during a big conflict in India called the Indian Mutiny (also known as the Indian Rebellion of 1857).
On April 15, 1858, Captain Cafe showed incredible bravery during a battle. His unit was attacking a place called Fort Ruhya in India. A lieutenant from another group, the 14th Punjab Rifles, was badly hurt. He was lying in a very dangerous spot, right at the top of a sloped area near the fort, called a glacis. Enemy soldiers were firing heavily at this spot.
Captain Cafe, along with other volunteers, rushed forward. They worked together to carry the injured lieutenant to safety. Even after this, Captain Cafe went back to help another soldier who was also badly wounded. His actions saved lives and showed amazing courage under fire.
Because of his bravery, Captain Cafe was awarded the Victoria Cross. His story was written in the London Gazette, which is an official record. Today, his Victoria Cross medal is kept at the National Army Museum in London.
Later Life and Legacy
After his heroic actions, William Martin Cafe continued his military career. He eventually reached the rank of General.
