Helping Babies: The Thalidomide Story
Dr. McBride worked as an obstetrician, a doctor who takes care of women during pregnancy and childbirth. In the early 1960s, he noticed something worrying. Many pregnant women were taking a new medicine called thalidomide, which was supposed to help with morning sickness and sleep. However, Dr. McBride and a midwife named Pat Sparrow started seeing babies born with unusual birth defects, especially problems with their arms and legs.
He bravely wrote a letter about his findings, warning others about the dangers of thalidomide. This letter was published in a medical journal. His warning helped to stop the use of thalidomide for pregnant women around the world. Because of his actions, many more babies were saved from serious birth defects. His work changed how doctors and scientists thought about the safety of medicines for pregnant women.
Awards and Recognition
For his important discovery, Dr. McBride received several honors. He was named "Man of the Year" in 1962. He also received special awards from both the British and Australian governments, including being made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1969 and an Officer of the Order of Australia in 1977. He was even named "Father of the Year" in 1972.
