Sir William Neville (born around 1341 – died October 19, 1391) was an English knight known for his strong beliefs as a Lollard. He also served as the constable of Nottingham castle. Sir William went on a religious journey, or crusade, with his close friend, Sir John Clanvowe. They were buried together inside the Arap Mosque in Istanbul.

Life of Sir William Neville

Sir William Neville was an important knight who worked directly for King Richard II of England. He was given the important job of constable at Nottingham Castle, which meant he was in charge of the castle's defense and daily operations. William was the son of Ralph Neville, 2nd Baron Neville, who was also a significant figure.

Sir William and the Robin Hood Story

Sir William Neville is connected to the famous Robin Hood legends. This link comes from his very close friendship with another knight, Sir John Clanvowe. They shared a deep and loyal bond.

The Jest of Robin Hood

Sir John Clanvowe was also a poet. He wrote a poem called "The Jest of Robin Hood." This poem was created to celebrate a visit by King Richard II to Nottingham Castle. Some historians believe that the strong friendship between Clanvowe and Neville might have inspired parts of this poem.

A Strong Friendship

William Neville and John Clanvowe had a very strong and formal friendship, a kind of deep loyalty that was important in medieval times. They traveled together on a pilgrimage near Constantinople. Sadly, Sir John Clanvowe passed away on October 17, 1391. Just two days later, on October 19, Sir William Neville also died in the same village. Records from the 14th century describe how deeply Sir William mourned the loss of his friend.

Their Tombstone

In 1913, a special tombstone belonging to Sir William Neville and Sir John Clanvowe was found inside the Arap Mosque. This tombstone showed two helmets that appeared to be touching, symbolizing their close connection. Today, this historical artifact is kept at the İstanbul Archaeology Museums.
