William Noel (born March 19, 1695 – died December 8, 1762) was an important English lawyer, judge, and politician. He was a member of the British House of Commons, which is like a main part of the British government, for 35 years. He served there from 1722 to 1757.

Early Life and Education

William Noel was born on March 19, 1695, in Kirkby Mallory, Leicestershire. He was the second son of Sir John Noel, who was a Baronet, and his wife Mary Clobery. His older brother was named Sir Clobery Noel.

William went to Lichfield grammar school in Staffordshire. After school, he studied law. He joined the Inner Temple, which is a place where lawyers train, in 1716. He officially became a lawyer, or was "called to the bar," in 1721.

Political and Legal Career

In 1722, William Noel became a Member of Parliament (MP) for a town called Stamford. An MP is someone elected to represent people in the British House of Commons. He was supported by the Earl of Exeter and even received money from him for helping with his finances.

He was re-elected in 1727 and again in 1734. In Parliament, he sometimes disagreed with the government. For example, he spoke against certain military spending. In 1736, he became a deputy-recorder for Stamford, which is a legal role in the town.

In 1738, William Noel became a king's counsel. This is a special title given to experienced lawyers. He also became a bencher of the Inner Temple, which means he was a senior member of the legal society.

He continued to be re-elected as an MP, including in 1741. In 1747, he became an MP for West Looe in Cornwall. He was then appointed as the chief justice of Chester in 1749, which is a high-ranking judge position. He was re-elected for West Looe in 1754.

In 1757, William Noel became a justice of the common pleas. This was another important judge role. When he took this job, he left Parliament. He kept his judge position in Chester. When his nephew became a Baron in 1745, William Noel started using the special title "The Honourable".
