Noel Hill, the 1st Baron Berwick (born April 16, 1745 – died January 6, 1789), was an important English landowner and politician. He served in the House of Commons, which is part of the British Parliament, from 1768 to 1784. After this, he was given the special title of a Baron.
Early Life and Education
Noel Hill was the youngest and only son of Thomas Hill and Susanna Maria Noel. He was born in London, at his father's home in St James's.
Noel was taught at home by private teachers, including a future preacher named John William Fletcher. He later went to St John's College, Cambridge. He earned his first degree there in 1763 and a master's degree in 1766. He also studied law, which is the system of rules a country uses.
Political Career
Noel Hill was a member of the Whig political party. He became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Shrewsbury in 1768 and served until 1774. An MP is someone elected to represent a specific area in the House of Commons.
After that, he became an MP for Shropshire from 1774 to 1784. On May 19, 1784, he was given the title of Baron Berwick. This meant he became a member of the Peerage of Great Britain, a group of people with special noble titles.
Besides being an MP, Noel Hill also served as the Mayor of Shrewsbury from 1778 to 1779. He was also the Mayor of Oswestry from 1779 to 1780.
Family Life
Noel Hill married Anna Vernon on November 17, 1768, in London. Anna was the daughter of Henry Vernon and Lady Henrietta Wentworth.
Noel and Anna had six children together: three sons and three daughters. Their children included:
- Thomas Noel Hill, who became the 2nd Baron Berwick (1770–1832).
- William Noel-Hill, who became the 3rd Baron Berwick (1773–1842). He was also an MP.
- Richard Noel-Hill, who became the 4th Baron Berwick (1774–1848).
- Hon. Henrietta Maria Hill (died 1831).
- Hon. Anna Matilda Hill (died 1837).
- Hon. Amelia Louisa Hill (died 1850).
Lord Berwick passed away on January 6, 1789, when he was 43 years old. He was buried in Atcham, Shropshire. All of his sons took on the title of Baron Berwick one after another.
