William Redish Pywell (born June 9, 1843 – died 1887) was an important American photographer in the 1800s. He helped capture history with his camera, especially during and after the American Civil War.

A Photographer of History

William Pywell started his career working with famous photographers like Mathew Brady and Alexander Gardner. These photographers were known for their work during the American Civil War.

Capturing the Civil War

During the Civil War, William Pywell helped create a visual record of the conflict. He took many photographs that showed what the war was like. These pictures helped people understand the events of that time.

His work with Alexander Gardner was later published in a book called "Photographic Sketch Book of the War." This book, released in 1866, showed many of the powerful images Pywell and others had captured.

Exploring the American West

After the Civil War ended, William Pywell continued his adventures as a photographer. He joined important expeditions that explored the American West.

In 1873, he traveled with George Custer on the Yellowstone Expedition. Pywell was the official photographer for this trip. His job was to take pictures of the amazing landscapes and new places they discovered.

He also went on the Kansas Expedition with Alexander Gardner. These journeys allowed Pywell to photograph parts of America that were still wild and largely unexplored. His photos helped show people back East what the western territories looked like.

William Pywell's photographs are a valuable part of American history. They give us a glimpse into life during the Civil War and the exciting era of westward expansion.
