Kids Encyclopedia Facts

William Sandys, 6th Baron Sandys (who died in 1668) was an important officer in the Royalist army. This army fought for King Charles I during the English Civil War, a big conflict in England's history. William Sandys was known as a Cavalier, which was the name given to supporters of the King.

Early Life and Education

William Sandys was the oldest son of Henry Sandys, 5th Baron Sandys. His mother was Margaret, whose father was Sir William Sandys from a place called Miserden in Gloucestershire.

When William was about 12 years old, he started studying at Balliol College, Oxford. This happened on February 8, 1639.

Role in the English Civil War

During the English Civil War, William Sandys became a colonel, leading a group of soldiers in the Royalist army. He was a strong supporter of the King.

Defending Worcester City

William Sandys played a key role as the acting Governor of Worcester. In 1643, a Parliamentary army, led by Sir William Waller, tried to take over Worcester. William Sandys successfully defended the city, keeping it under Royalist control during the Siege of Worcester (1643).

Surrender of Hartlebury Castle

Later in the war, in 1646, William Sandys was the governor of Hartlebury Castle. On May 14, 1646, he had to surrender the castle. This happened when a force led by Sir Thomas Morgan, 1st Baronet surrounded and attacked it. This was near the end of the First English Civil War.

After the War

Around 1654, the Sandys family's main home, The Vine, was no longer theirs. This grand house was built a long time ago by William Sandys, 1st Baron Sandys, during the time of King Henry VIII of England. The house was either sold or taken away because of rules about people who supported the King during the war. It then went to Chaloner Chute, who was a Member of Parliament.

After the King was brought back to power in England, a time known as the Restoration, William Sandys was called to join Parliament on May 8, 1661. He passed away in 1668. His younger brother, Henry Sandys, became the 7th Baron Sandys and also joined Parliament later.

Family Life

William Sandys married a woman named Mary, who was the daughter of William Cecil, 2nd Earl of Salisbury. They did not have any children who survived.
