William Scawen was born in 1644. His father was named Robert Scawen. They lived in a place called Horton, in Buckinghamshire, England.
Sir William's Career
Sir William Scawen was given the title "Sir" in 1692. This means he was knighted.
Working at the Bank of England
After working in business for some years, he joined the Bank of England. He became a Director in 1694. He was a Director again from 1699 until he passed away.
In 1695, he became the Deputy Governor. This was a very important role. Then, in 1697, he became the Governor of the Bank of England. He held this top position until 1699.
Other Business Roles
Sir William was also a Director of the East India Company. This company was very powerful. He worked there from 1710 to 1712. In 1696, he was wealthy enough to buy part of a large estate called Carshalton manor.
Serving in Parliament
Sir William Scawen also worked in politics. He became a Member of Parliament (MP) in 1693. An MP is someone elected to represent people in the government.
He represented the area of New Windsor until 1698. After that, he was elected for Grampound in 1698. He was elected for Grampound twice in 1701. In December 1701, he was also chosen to represent Truro.
Later, he served two terms as an MP for Surrey. He was an MP for Surrey from 1705 to 1710. He served again from 1721 until 1722.
Personal Life
Sir William Scawen married a woman named Mary. She was the daughter of Sir William Maynard, 1st Baronet. They did not have any children of their own.
When Sir William passed away, he left his home in Horton to his brother Thomas. He also had many other properties. These were in Buckinghamshire, Surrey, Yorkshire, Cornwall, and Ireland. He left all these to his nephew Thomas. This nephew was his brother Thomas's son.
