William Sherlock

William Sherlock was an important English church leader who lived from about 1639 to 1707. He was known for his writings and for holding significant positions in the Church of England during a time of big changes in England.

Early Life and Education

William Sherlock was born in Southwark, England. His father was a tradesman. He went to good schools like St Saviour's Grammar School and Eton College. Later, he studied at Peterhouse, Cambridge University.

Church Career

In 1669, William Sherlock became a church leader (a rector) in London. He later got important roles at St Paul's Cathedral in 1681. In 1684, he became the Master of the Temple. This was a special position for a church leader connected to the legal community in London.

During this time, England was going through political changes. In 1686, Sherlock was criticized for speaking out against the King's chaplain. He also spoke against the Pope, which was a sensitive topic then.

The Glorious Revolution

After the Glorious Revolution in 1688, King James II was replaced by William III and Mary II. Many people had to swear loyalty to the new King and Queen. At first, Sherlock refused to do this. This meant he was suspended from his church roles. However, he eventually changed his mind and swore the oaths. This allowed him to keep his important positions.

In 1691, he became the Dean of St Paul's. This made him a very senior leader at one of England's most famous cathedrals.

Theological Debates

Around this time, Sherlock became involved in a big debate about the Trinity. This is a core Christian belief about God. He wrote books about it in 1690 and 1693. His ideas caused a lot of discussion and even led to arguments with other church leaders. Some of his ideas were even called "heretical" (meaning against accepted church teachings) by Oxford University. Sherlock wrote more books to defend his views.

William Sherlock passed away in Hampstead in 1707. His son, Thomas Sherlock, also became a famous church leader.

Key Writings

William Sherlock wrote many books and sermons. Here are a few of his important works:

  • The Knowledge of Jesus Christ and Union with Him (1674): This book showed his interest in debates, as it criticized another theologian.
  • The Case of Resistance of the Supreme Powers Stated and Resolved According to the Doctrine of the Holy Scriptures (1684): This book discussed when it was okay to resist a ruler. It was popular among many church leaders.
  • A Practical Discourse Concerning Death (1689): This book became very popular. He wrote it during the time he was suspended from his church duties.
  • A Vindication of the Doctrine of the Holy and Ever Blessed Trinity (1690): This book was his response to the debates about the Trinity.
  • The Case of the Allegiance Due to Sovereign Powers Stated and Resolved According to Scripture and Reason and the Principles of the Church of England (1691): In this book, he explained why he changed his mind and swore loyalty to William and Mary.

His collected sermons were also published in several editions, showing how influential his preaching was.
