Early Life and Local Government

William Singleton might have been the son of Thomas Singleton, who was a merchant in London and Gloucester. William himself worked as a draper, which means he sold cloth.

He held several important jobs in Gloucester. In 1618, he was the Sheriff of Gloucester. A sheriff was a local official who helped keep law and order. Later, in 1635, he was chosen to be an alderman. Aldermen were important members of the city council.

In 1637, William Singleton became the Mayor of Gloucester. The mayor is the leader of a city's government. He served as mayor again in 1651.

A Role in Parliament

In April 1640, William Singleton was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for Gloucester. This happened during a time known as the Short Parliament. Being an MP meant he represented Gloucester in the House of Commons, which is a part of England's government.

The English Civil War

William Singleton also had a small role in the English Civil War. This was a big fight between the King and Parliament. Singleton supported the Parliamentarians, who were also called the Roundheads.

In 1643, he was a captain. He helped defend Gloucester during the war as part of Colonel Henry Stephens's army group.

Family Life

William Singleton married Martha Lane on June 21, 1624. Martha was the daughter of William Lane, who was also from Gloucester. They were married at St Nicholas Church.
