Sir William Bertram Swan (born September 19, 1914 – died December 4, 1990) was an important officer in the British Army. He was also a successful farmer. He was known for his leadership in both the military and in farming organizations throughout his life.

Growing Up

William Bertram Swan was born in 1914. He was the oldest son of Nichol Allan Swan and Anne Gardener Keir. He went to school at Edinburgh Academy. After finishing school in 1933, he started working in farming.

Military Service

William Swan joined the military in 1939. He became an officer in the King's Own Scottish Borderers. This was part of the Territorial Army, which is a group of part-time soldiers.

He fought with his regiment in the Battle of France. This was an important part of the Second World War. From 1942 to 1945, he worked with the British Indian Army. He helped train soldiers and mules in a special unit.

After the war ended, Swan returned to his farm in Scotland. He continued to serve in military roles later in life. From 1955 to 1973, he was a leader for the Army Cadet Force in three Scottish areas. He was given the rank of lieutenant-colonel. He also served as a colonel in the Lowlands Territorial Army from 1983 to 1986.

Farming Leadership

Sir William Swan was also very active in the world of farming. He held several important positions:

  • He was the President of the National Farmers Union of Scotland from 1961 to 1962.
  • He led the Scottish Agricultural Organisation Society from 1966 to 1968.
  • He was a member of the Development Commission for many years, from 1964 to 1976.
