Sir William Taillour (born 1406, died 1483) was an important person in London during the 1400s. You might also see his name spelled Taylor or Taylour. He became the Lord Mayor of London in 1468. This was during the time when King Henry VI ruled England.
William Taillour was a very successful grocer. In the past, a grocer sold many different things, not just food. He served as a Sheriff of London in 1455. A Sheriff was like a chief law enforcement officer for the city. Later, in 1458, he became an Alderman. Aldermen were senior members of the city council who helped run London.
He was made a knight on May 21, 1471. This was the same day that King Henry VI died. Being knighted meant he was given the title "Sir" for his service. In 1483, he was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for the City of London. He was one of two Aldermen who represented the city in Parliament. Sir William Taillour passed away in 1483.
Taylour House: A Historic Home
Sir William Taylour had a special house built for him in Edenbridge, a town in Kent. This house is still known as Taylour House today.
Symbols on the Entrance Door
If you look closely at the entrance door, you can see some interesting symbols. On the right side of the door frame, you'll find Sir William Taylour's own family symbol, called a coat of arms. On the left side, there is the symbol of the Grocers Company. This shows his connection to his successful business.
Inside Taylour House
The house was once called "The Griffin." Inside, it has a beautiful staircase from the Jacobean period. This means it was built or decorated in the style popular during the early 1600s. There are also old wall paintings from that time, which makes the house very unique.
