William Trail (born June 23, 1746 – died February 3, 1831) was a smart mathematician from Scotland. He is best known for writing math textbooks. For most of his life, he worked in churches in Northern Ireland.

William Trail's Early Life and Education

William Trail was born in Scotland. His father was Reverend James Traill, who later became a bishop in Northern Ireland. William was also related to another mathematician, George Lewis Scott. They often wrote letters to each other.

In 1759, William started studying at Marischal College in Aberdeen, Scotland. Then, in 1763, he moved to the University of Glasgow. There, he studied with a famous teacher named Robert Simson. William earned his Master of Arts degree in 1766.

Becoming a Professor

After finishing his studies, William Trail became a professor. In 1766, he got a special job teaching mathematics at Marischal College. This was a very important position.

In 1779, William decided to leave his job as a professor. He moved to Northern Ireland to work in the church. He became a leader in the Down and Connor church, working under his father, the bishop. He continued his church duties for about 40 years.

Helping Start the Royal Society of Edinburgh

In 1783, William Trail was in Edinburgh, Scotland. He helped start a very important group called the Royal Society of Edinburgh. This society brings together smart people to share new ideas in science and other fields.

Later Life and Family

Around 1821, William Trail retired. He moved to Bath, Somerset, England, with his wife. He passed away there on February 3, 1831.

In 1799, William married Lady Frances Charteris. She was the daughter of Francis Wemyss-Charteris. They did not have any children. Lady Frances lived until 1848.
