In 1563, Waldegrave was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Suffolk. This meant he represented the people of Suffolk in the English government. He was given the title of "Knight" in 1576, becoming "Sir William Waldegrave." From 1586 to 1589, he also served as the Sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk. A Sheriff was an important official who helped keep law and order in the local area.

Sir William Waldegrave was married twice. His first wife was Elizabeth Mildmay, who passed away in 1581. They had six sons and four daughters together. Later, he married Grizelda, who was the daughter of William Paget, 1st Baron Paget. Grizelda was also the widow of Sir Thomas Rivett.
