William Washington was a talented baseball player born in 1885. He played as a catcher in the Negro leagues. These leagues were important because they gave Black athletes a chance to play professional baseball before the major leagues were integrated.
William Washington played for several years before the first official Negro National League was started in 1920.
Playing for the Chicago Union Giants
William Washington was a key player for the Chicago Union Giants. He joined the team in 1906. He played with them until 1909.
In 1909, Washington was a very busy player. He played as a catcher in almost every game during a long tour. The team played 56 games on this tour. They won 46 of those games, which is a great record!
During this exciting tour, William Washington caught pitches for many different pitchers. Some of these pitchers included Clarence Lytle, Jimmie Lyons, Bennie Lyons, Harry Hyde, Mack Ramsey, and Wesley Prior.
Later Career
After his time with the Chicago Union Giants, William Washington continued his baseball career. In 1911, he played for the Chicago Giants. He was an important part of these early Black baseball teams.
