Early Life and Education
William Watts Hart Davis was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, in 1820. His parents were Major General John Davis and Amy (Hart) Davis.
He went to several schools as a child. He started at a private school and then attended a church school. In 1832, he went to Doylestown Academy. He finished his early schooling at a boarding school in New Jersey.
In 1841, he began studying at a military school in Vermont. He graduated from there in 1842. After graduating, he taught math and helped train cadets at a military academy in Virginia for three years.

Mexican-American War
In 1846, while studying law at Harvard, he decided to join the army. He volunteered to fight in the Mexican–American War. He started as a private soldier. Soon after, he became a first lieutenant in Captain Crowningshield's Company. He served until the war ended in July 1848.
American Civil War
Later, Davis served in the American Civil War. He was given permission to create his own group of soldiers. This group became known as the 104th Pennsylvania Regiment. He led these soldiers during the war.
On March 13, 1865, he received a special honor. He was given the rank of Brigadier General. This was for his "gallant and meritorious services." This means he was very brave and did excellent work during battles near Charleston, South Carolina.
Life After the War
