Dr. William Willis

William Willis (1837–1894) was a British doctor and professor. He is known for his important work in Japan, where he helped develop modern medicine.

His Early Life

William Willis was born in Ireland in 1837. He studied to become a doctor at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. He earned his medical degree in 1859. William also had an older brother named George, who was also a doctor in Wales.

Working in Japan

In 1861, William Willis moved to Japan. He became the doctor for the British group living in Edo, which is now known as Tokyo. This was a very important role at the time.

A few years later, in 1869, Willis became a professor. He was also made the head of the medical school at the Tokyo Imperial University. He taught many Japanese students about modern medical practices.

In 1870, Willis moved to Kagoshima. There, he became the head of the local hospital. He also helped to start a new medical school at the University of Kagoshima. He played a big part in bringing new medical knowledge to Japan.

Returning Home

William Willis returned to the United Kingdom in 1881. He worked as a doctor with his brother in Wales. He continued to practice medicine until 1885.
