Kids Encyclopedia Facts

William Wiseman was a Scottish nobleman and soldier who lived a long time ago, in the 1200s and 1300s. He was involved in important events during the First War of Scottish Independence, a time when Scotland fought to be free from England. He even served as the Sheriff of Elgin for a short period.

William Wiseman's Life and Battles

William Wiseman was an important figure during a tough time for Scotland. In 1295, he showed loyalty to King Edward I of England at Elgin. He did this again in 1304 at St Andrews. In 1305, he was made the Sheriff of Elgin, which was like being a local governor and law enforcer.

However, William Wiseman soon decided to support Robert the Bruce. Robert the Bruce was trying to become the King of Scotland. Because of this, William lost his job as Sheriff, his special rights, and his lands.

He managed to escape safely from the Battle of Methven on June 19, 1306. This was a difficult battle for Robert the Bruce's supporters. Sadly, William's wife was captured. She was taken along with Robert the Bruce's wife, Elizabeth de Burgh. They were captured by William II, Earl of Ross, who supported the English King Edward I. This happened when Kildrummy Castle was taken.

William Wiseman continued to fight for Scotland's freedom. He was part of the forces led by Sir James Douglas. They fought in the Battle of the Pass of Brander. William also captured Skelbo Castle on April 7, 1308. After that, he tried to take Elgin Castle, which was held by the English. He wasn't able to capture it because English forces arrived to help the castle's defenders.

In March 1309, William attended a special meeting called a Parliament in St. Andrew's. He was one of the important Scottish leaders who signed a letter to King Philip IV of France. This letter asked for France's support for Scotland's independence.

Sir William Wiseman was killed during the Battle of Neville's Cross on October 17, 1346. This battle took place in Durham, England. The Scottish army, led by King David II of Scotland, was defeated by the English forces.
