William de Moray (died around 1304) was an important Scottish noble. He was known as the Lord of Drumsagard. This meant he was a powerful landowner in Scotland during a very important time in its history.

Who Was William de Moray?

William de Moray was the son of Andrew Moray. His father was a very high-ranking official called the Justiciar of Scotia. A Justiciar was like a chief judge and administrator for a large part of Scotland.

A Time of Change in Scotland

William lived during the late 1200s and early 1300s. This was a time when Scotland was often in conflict with its neighbor, England. Kings and nobles from both countries were trying to decide who should rule Scotland.

Important Agreements and Loyalties

William de Moray was involved in some big events of his time.

  • He signed the Treaty of Salisbury. This was an agreement made in 1290 about who would be the next ruler of Scotland.
  • He also promised his loyalty, or "swore fealty," to Edward I of England. He did this in both 1296 and 1304. This meant he agreed to be loyal to the English king, even though he was a Scottish noble. Many Scottish nobles had to make similar promises during this period.

His Family and Legacy

William de Moray's son, John, took over his father's lands and title after William's death. The Moray family, also known as the Clan Murray, was a very old and important family in Scotland.
