William Ros, 2nd Baron Ros of Helmsley (born around 1285 – died February 3, 1343) was an important English nobleman. He was the son of William Ros, 1st Baron Ros and Maud de Vaux.

William Ros: A Life of Service

As the 2nd Baron Ros of Helmsley, William was a powerful lord. He was called to join the Parliament during the reigns of King Edward II and King Edward III of England. This meant he helped make important decisions for the country.

In 1321, William finished building a religious center in Blakeney that his father had started. He was also given the special title of Lord Ross of Werke.

William Ros held a very important job called Lord High Admiral. This meant he was in charge of the king's navy. He was also chosen to be one of the people who helped make peace. He worked with the Archbishop of York and others to try and end the fighting between the English king and Robert de Bruce, who was the King of Scotland.

William Ros was buried at Kirkham Priory, a religious house near a large altar.

His Family Life

Before November 25, 1316, William Ros married Margery Badlesmere. She was born around 1306 and passed away on October 18, 1363. Margery was the oldest daughter of Bartholomew Badlesmere, 1st Baron Badlesmere and Margaret de Clare, Baroness Badlesmere.

William and Margery had five children together:

  • William, who became the next Baron after his father.
  • Thomas, who became Baron after his brother.
  • Margaret, who married a knight named Sir Edward de Bohun.
  • Maud, who married John de Welles, the 4th Baron Welles.
  • Elizabeth, who married William la Zouche, the 2nd Baron Haryngworth.

Margery lived many years after William passed away. She was one of the very few English people who traveled to Rome for a special religious event called the Jubilee in 1350. The king had tried to stop his people from going to this event because a lot of money was usually taken out of England on such trips.
