William Ros, 3rd Baron Ros of Helmsley (born May 19, 1329 – died before September 29, 1352) was an important military leader. He served under King Edward III of England. William Ros was a brave knight who fought in some major battles during his time.

A Young Knight

In 1346, William Ros was knighted by King Edward III. This was a special honor given to brave warriors. He was knighted on July 12, 1346, at the church of St. Vigor in Quettehou. Many other young men were also knighted that day. This included Edward, the Black Prince, who was the king's son. They were all preparing for a big military campaign.

Fighting for England

William Ros played a key role in several important battles.

The Siege of Aiguillon

Before being knighted, William Ros helped defend Aiguillon. This was a town under attack. His actions helped to lift the siege.

The Battle of Crécy

Later in 1346, William Ros was a leader in the Battle of Crécy. This was a very famous battle where the English army fought against the French. He helped lead the second part of the English forces.

The Battle of Neville's Cross

After Crécy, William Ros commanded a part of the English army against the Scots. This battle took place near Neville's Cross. The English won this battle. The Scottish king, David Bruce, was captured along with many Scottish nobles.

The Siege of Calais

Also in 1346, William Ros was with King Edward III and the Black Prince. They were at the siege of Calais. The English army successfully captured the city of Calais.

His Later Life and Death

In 1352, William Ros traveled to Prussia. He went with Henry of Grosmont, Duke of Lancaster. Sadly, William Ros died that same year. He was only twenty-three years old. He passed away before the end of September and was buried abroad.

Family Life

William Ros married Margaret Neville around August 28, 1349. Margaret Neville was the daughter of Ralph Neville, 2nd Baron Neville. William and Margaret did not have any children together. After William's death, Margaret married Henry Percy, 1st Earl of Northumberland.
