William de Ros of Helmsley facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

William de Ros, Lord of Helmsley, was an important English noble. He was the oldest son of Robert de Ros and Isabella Mac William. William de Ros lived during a time when powerful families often had disagreements with the king.

William and his father did not agree with King John of England. They were part of a big conflict called the First Barons War, which happened between 1215 and 1217. During this rebellion, both William and his father were excommunicated. This meant they were officially removed from the Christian Church, which was a very serious punishment back then.

During the war, William was captured at the Battle of Lincoln on May 19, 1217. He became a prisoner. Later, in October 1217, he was set free after a payment of 20 marks was made. A mark was a type of money used a long time ago. After his release, he was placed in his father's care.

William de Ros was buried at Kirkham Priory in Kirkham, North Yorkshire, England.
