William McAndrew was a Scottish football player and manager. He was born on September 3, 1887, and passed away on December 23, 1965. He played for several famous Scottish clubs. These included Queen's Park, Clyde, Third Lanark, and Dundee Hibernian. Later, he became a football manager.
Playing Football
William McAndrew played as a half back. This position is like a midfielder today. He started his career with Queen's Park in 1907. He played 105 games for them.
In 1910, he moved to Clyde. He played 158 games for Clyde over ten years. During his time at Clyde, he played in the 1912 Scottish Cup Final. This is a very important football match in Scotland. He also played three times for the Scottish League team. This team was made up of the best players from the Scottish League.
After Clyde, he played for Third Lanark from 1920 to 1922. He played 57 games for them. His last club as a player was Dundee Hibernian.
Becoming a Manager
While at Dundee Hibernian, William McAndrew briefly worked as a caretaker player-manager. This means he played and managed the team for a short time.
His first full-time manager job was with Hamilton Academical. He started there in 1925. He stayed with Hamilton Academical for a very long time, 21 years!
Success at Hamilton Academical
During his time as manager, he led Hamilton Academical to the 1935 Scottish Cup Final. This was a big achievement for the club. In the same season, 1934-35, his team also finished fourth in the Scottish First Division. This showed they were one of the top teams in the country.
After his long period at Hamilton, he briefly managed Dunfermline Athletic in 1947.
Personal Life
William McAndrew also served his country. He was a lieutenant in the Glasgow Highlanders during the First World War. Sadly, he was captured during the war. He became a prisoner of war.
