Willisville is a small, special community in Loudoun County, Virginia. It is about sixteen miles from Leesburg, the county seat. Willisville is located where Willisville, Millville, and Welbourne Roads meet.

This community is known for its unique history. It was named after a man named Heuson Willis. He was a freed slave who bought land there shortly after the American Civil War.

The Story of Willisville

Willisville became a close-knit community. Most of its residents were African American. It grew to include about a dozen houses and a church. For a long time, it was one of the last communities in Loudoun County that did not have running water in homes.

Becoming a Historic Place

The Virginia Piedmont Heritage Area Association worked to make Willisville a historic site. A person who helps protect old places, Jane Covington, prepared the paperwork. She wanted the village to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This is an official list of places in the United States that are important to history.

The application was sent to the Virginia Department of Historic Resources. In 2019, Willisville was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means its history and importance are recognized and protected.
